Research on Killing Novel Coronavirus on Cold-Chain Food by Irradiation Makes Key Progress

Updated: 2021-07-12

Research on prevention and control of novel coronavirus on imported cold-chain food by radiation sterilization technology recently passed testing by the technology quality and information technology department of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

Led by CNNC's China Institute for Radiation Protection (CIRP), China Isotope & Radiation Corporation, Nuctech, the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tsinghua University, results of the research project verified that the radiation dose and developed supporting radiation sterilization techniques used in sterilizing the novel coronavirus on imported cold chain food products were effective.

In addition, the impact of different doses of radiation exposure on the quality and safety of such products; and an integrated solution for cold chain disinfection plants and key equipment for logistics, were also analyzed and developed through the research.

The result was a milestone in the industrialized application that is expected to create a convenient and harmless technology for removing the virus from cold-chain food.
