Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) recently won its bid for the construction of the Chinchero International Airport in Peru.
Located in the suburb of Cusco, the new airport is about 1,150 kilometers from Lima, the capital city.
The project includes the construction of two 4-km runways, a 42,512-square meter terminal, and other supporting facilities like the apron, a control tower, a hangar, boarding corridors, a freight center and special airport systems for security, jet fuel, luggage and parking. The engineering is scheduled to be completed within 49 months.
Cusco is on the route to the "City in the Sky" of Machu Picchu, a tourist attraction containing relics of the Incan Empire that was inscribed by UNESCO on the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
The new airport is expected to improve Cusco's aviation transport capacity and promote a more diversified development of the region's tourism sector.
