POWERCHINA Improves Power Output of Tarbela Hydropower Station in Pakistan

Updated: 2021-06-22

The fourth phase expansion project of the Tarbela Hydropower Station in Pakistan passed inspection on June 3, 27 days ahead of schedule.

Contracted to Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), the project included turning the No. 4 irrigation tunnel into a water diversion and power generation channel, and building three generator units to increase the installed capacity of the plant to 4,888 megawatts.

Construction of the project began on Oct 29, 2013.

The new generator units went into operation in February 2018, producing more than 3 billion kilowatt-hours of clean power for 2 million households annually, which relieves power shortages in the country and contributes to local economic development.

The Tarbela Hydropower Station is about 113 kilometers from Islamabad. Before the expansion project was completed, it had 14 generator units and a total installed capacity of 3,478 MW.
