Road to Tibet's Metog Ready for Operation

The Paizhen-Metog highway in Nyingchi, Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region was recently completed after nearly seven years of construction as the crucial section of the Laohuzui Tunnel was excavated through.

The 67.22-kilometer highway starts from Paizhen Town in Manling County, winds through Mount Duoxiongla and stretches along the Duoxiong River. Passing Hanmi and Laohuzui, the highway ends in Beibeng Town in Metog County, also known as the Hidden Lotus.

With a total investment of nearly 2.02 billion yuan ($316.53 million), the highway was built by China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd. (China Huaneng), and is the second artery to link downtown Nyingchi and Metog.

Setting a goal of building the highway into the most beautiful and environmentally-protective road in China, China Huaneng invested 110 million yuan in environmental protection during construction.

The highway is scheduled to open for traffic in September 2022. By then, travel time between the two terminals will be shortened to four hours.

It will effectively boost tourism in the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in Manling and Metog and help with marketing of local high-quality agricultural products, which will be of great significance in consolidating poverty-alleviation achievements and rural vitalization.
