China Oil & Gas Pipeline Network Corporation (PipeChina) started tunneling through the Yangtze River for the China-Russia East-Route natural gas pipeline project on May 18.
The project is expected to have the world's longest single excavation, the deepest tunnel, the highest water pressure, and the largest diameter tunnel of its kind.
With a total length of 10.23 kilometers, the cross-river tunnel is also the world's longest single-direction one of its kind, and China's first long-distance underwater tunnel.
The project is one of the largest diameter gas transmission pipelines in the world.
Construction of the pipeline started in July 2020 and is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
Upon completion, the line will transport natural gas produced in Russia to the Yangtze River Delta region to support emergency energy supplies.
