Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) is set to build a 1 million-kilowatt hydropower project on the Indus River in Pakistan, according to an agreement forged between the company and Pakistan's Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) on May 6.
WAPDA says that the fifth phase of the Tarbela Hydropower Station project is planned to have an installed capacity of 1.41 million kW and is expected to produce 1.8 billion kWh of power annually.
The project is scheduled to be put into operation in mid-2024. By that time, the total installed capacity of the Tarbela Hydropower Station will reach 6.3 million kW, which will greatly improve the proportion of renewable energy in Pakistan's energy mix.
The Tarbela Dam was first built in 1976 and construction of the first three phases was contracted to enterprises from Europe, the US and South Korea.
POWERCHINA was responsible for the fourth phase of the project, completing its construction in 2013. With an installed capacity of 1.41 million kW, the fourth phase increased the station's total capacity to 4.88 million kW, making it the largest power base in the country.
