The mangrove forestation project in Zhanjiang, South China's Guangdong Province, was recently registered as a mangrove forest carbon sink project, having meting all Verified Carbon Standard and Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards. This is the first registration of its kind in China.
The project was approved and verified by the China Quality Certification Centre of China Certification & Inspection Group (CCIC) and passed inspection by Verra, an organization that helps to tackle environmental and social challenges by developing and managing standards to achieve sustainable development and climate action goals.
CCIC will continue to provide high-quality approval and verification services for China's forestry and marine carbon sink projects in the future and promote their development and settlement.
The mangrove forest is one of the marine ecosystems with the best productivity in the intersecting zones of sea and land in tropical and subtropical zones. It plays a crucial role in purifying seawater, wind blockage and wave dissipation, and in maintenance of biodiversity and carbon sequestration and storage.
The project intends to recover the mangrove ecosystem and improve its coverage by planting various kinds of local mangrove species. It is also expected to provide a livable habitat for endangered birds and contribute to eliminating local greenhouse gases.
