Construction of Budapest-Belgrade Railway Makes Key Progress

Updated: 2021-04-01

The third section of the Budapest-Belgrade Railway opened for service on March 22, completing a full connection between Belgrade and Stara Pazova in Serbia.

The 34.5-kilometer Belgrade-Stara Pazova section was constructed by China Railway Construction Corporation Limited from June 2018.

The Budapest-Belgrade Railway, stretching 350 kilometers between the capitals of Serbia and Hungary, was first built in the late 19th century.

After the renovation, it will become a passenger-cargo electrified railway with a maximum designed speed of 200 kilometers per hour.

Once it is operational, travel time between the two terminals will be shortened to three hours.

The first railway project built by Chinese enterprises, the railway boosts connectivity between the Chinese and European railway systems.

It is also expected to improve regional traffic conditions and make Serbia a logistics hub.
