Construction of the 27.7-kilometer diversion tunnel of the Elahera Canal in Sri Lanka started on Feb 5.
A major part of the country's project to transfer water from south to north, the diversion tunnel is expected to improve irrigation systems in Sri Lanka's inland regions and water utilization. It will also help solve the local problem of uneven resource distribution and reduce the impact of flood and drought.
What's more, the tunnel will provide water for agricultural and daily use in affected areas and boost regional economic development in Central Sri Lanka.
China State Construction Engineering Corporation was responsible for the project.
