Guinea's First Modern Tunnel Drilled Through

Updated: 2021-02-09

A tunnel of the Dapilon-Santou railway, was drilled through on Jan 26, 2021, after 15 months of construction. It is the first modern tunnel in the Republic of Guinea.

Contracted by China Railway 14 Bureau Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, it is the country's first modern tunnel.

The 1.9-kilometer tunnel has a maximum burial depth of 96 meters and was built through areas with complicated geological conditions.

Special measures and construction modes were taken to improve engineering efficiency.

Located in the Boke and Kindia regions, the 112.3-kilometer railway is a supporting transport project connecting the Santou mining zone and the Port of Dapilon in Guinea.

Built to Chinese standards with Chinese technologies and China-made equipment, the railway is expected to strengthen Guinea's advantage in the global bauxite mining market. It will also play a role in boosting development of the railway network in West Africa and promoting regional economic and social development.
