Construction of Central Gov't-Funded Temporary COVID-19 Hospital in Hong Kong Completed

Updated: 2021-01-26

Construction of a temporary hospital funded by the central government for treatment of COVID-19 patients in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) was completed on Jan 20, 2021.

Located west of the AsiaWorld-Expo, the North Lantau Hospital Hong Kong Infection Control Center has a building area of about 44,000 square meters and features six inpatient buildings, one medical center and other supporting facilities.

One of the three major central government-funded anti-pandemic projects, the hospital is capable of providing 136 wards and 816 negative pressure beds, and is expected to improve the region's capacity against the COVID-19 pandemic and relieve pressure on its medical system.

China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) participated in building the newly-completed hospital, which took only four months.

Although named a "temporary hospital", it was designed and built to standards of a permanent structure. Equipped with various medical departments like nurse stations, clinical areas and laboratories, the hospital is also the world's first of its kind to have negative pressure isolation rooms.

So far, CSCEC has designed and built four quarantine center projects in Hong Kong and contributed to construction of more than 2,000 quarantine units, which has strongly supported the region's anti-pandemic battle.
