POWERCHINA-Contracted Hydropower Project in Honduras Goes into Operation

Updated: 2020-12-31

The Patuca III hydroelectric plant in Honduras went into operation on Dec 20 local time, and is expected to promote economic development in the country.

It is the largest hydropower plant project in the country in the last 30 years and the first China-financed project in a country that hasn't established diplomatic relation with China.

Contracted by Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), the construction of the project started on Sept 21, 2015.

The project included construction of a roller-compacted concrete gravity dam, workshops, two 52MW axial-flow water turbines, transformer substations and a 43-kilometer 230kV double-circuit power transmission line.

It is expected to produce 326 GWh of power annually, which will help relieve power shortages in the country.
